A straightforward single door into a prepared opening is commonly most of a day. A double door, or two doors, longer. Timing stretches when the opening needs squaring or new jambs, when the track configuration is non-standard because of headroom or a low ceiling, when a spring conversion is involved, or when an opener and its power supply go in at the same time. The measurement visit is what produces a real duration.

The opener can sometimes be reused if it is compatible with the new door's weight, size and safety requirements. The old door itself is removed, not reused, in a replacement.

A new or resized opening involves the building structure, and in Burlington and neighbouring towns that is a different question from swapping a door in an existing opening. Confirm the exact scope with the municipality before framing or ordering: there is no universal answer, because it would be wrong for some of the towns served. Industry cost-value studies have generally shown garage-door replacement among the higher-return exterior projects, but actual value depends on the local market, product chosen and the home.

Installation covers a door going into an opening that has not had one: new construction, a converted barn or outbuilding, a widened or newly framed opening. Replacement covers taking out an existing door and fitting a new one into the same opening. The distinction is practical: installation regularly involves framing, a new header, jamb work and electrical that replacement does not, and those carry their own approvals.

Someone needs to provide access to the garage and to answer questions about how the space is used. That conversation does not have to involve the whole household. The measurement covers opening width and height, headroom, backroom, side room, floor level and condition, existing framing, and where power is. Those measurements decide which doors and which track and spring configurations are even possible. It is not a step to skip.

Removal and disposal is normally part of a replacement, and it is worth having it stated explicitly in the scope, not assumed. A door left in a driveway is a common and avoidable complaint. Where the old door is going to be reused elsewhere, say so before the visit so it is taken down accordingly, not cut out.

Clear a working area of several feet inside and outside the opening, move vehicles out, take down anything mounted on the door or the immediate framing, and make sure there is a clear route in for a large flat load. If the garage is heated or has anything sensitive stored near the opening, expect the space to be open to the weather for much of the day.

Yes. Winter installs happen routinely, but plan for it. The garage is open to the weather while the work happens, sealant and adhesive behave differently in the cold. A snow-covered or icy floor affects both the working area and the final threshold seal. Where the schedule is flexible and the door is not urgent, a shoulder season is easier on everyone.

The sections themselves, the track and mounting hardware, the counterbalance system sized to the finished door's weight, rollers, hinges, cables, drums, bearings and brackets, the bottom seal and perimeter weatherstripping. The opener connection if one is involved. The counterbalance is the part most worth asking about. That system determines how the door will behave for the next decade.

It is generally a poor arrangement and often refused, for a practical reason, not a commercial one: the door has to be matched to the opening's real measurements and to a spring specification calculated from the finished weight, and a door bought on nominal dimensions frequently does not fit or needs a counterbalance the supplied hardware does not provide. It also usually removes the product warranty.

It depends entirely on the product: stock sizes in common configurations move fastest, while insulated, custom-sized, custom-colour, glazed or specialty doors take longer. Lead times across this industry have been volatile for several years. Ask for the current lead time on the specific door at the point of ordering, and treat any number older than that as out of date.

Often noticeably, but not for the reason people expect. An old uninsulated door with a failed bottom seal and gaps at the jambs loses far more through air leakage than through the panel itself, so the sealing that comes with a correctly fitted new door frequently makes more difference than the insulation rating. If comfort is the goal, ask about the perimeter as well as the R-value.
