Opener repair questions
Why does the door reverse before closing?+
An obstruction, photo-eye alignment issue, track resistance, travel setting or mechanical door problem can cause reversal. Safety devices should be diagnosed and restored—not bypassed.
Is the opener broken if the motor runs?+
Not necessarily. The trolley, drive system, door balance, spring system or a disconnected carriage may be involved. The complete system should be checked.
When should an opener be replaced?+
Replacement may make sense when key parts are unavailable, safe operation cannot be restored economically, failures repeat, or you want features such as battery backup or connected access.
Can you repair my garage door opener?+
Often, yes — logic boards, drive gears, belts and chains, trolleys, limit and travel settings, safety sensors, wall controls and remotes are all repairable items on mainstream residential openers. What limits it is parts: a discontinued unit whose board is no longer made is a replacement rather than a repair, however sound the rest of it looks. Give the brand and model from the label on the motor housing and the answer becomes specific.
Why do my garage door opener lights blink?+
On most modern openers a blinking light is a deliberate diagnostic signal, not a bulb fault. The most common meaning by a wide margin is that the photo-eye safety sensors are not seeing each other — misaligned, dirty, obstructed, or with a damaged wire. Some brands also use blink patterns for lock mode, travel-limit errors and motor faults. The blink count and the model together identify it; the manufacturer's own manual is the authority.
Why does my opener hum but not move the door?+
A motor that runs while the door stays put usually means the drive is no longer connected to the door or is unable to move it: a stripped drive gear, a broken chain, belt or trolley, a disengaged emergency release, or a door so heavy — from a failed spring — that the opener cannot lift it. The last of those is the important one to rule out first, because it is a door problem wearing an opener costume.
Do you replace photo-eye safety sensors?+
Yes, and they are replaced rather than bypassed, always. The photo eyes are the entrapment-protection system that federal rules have required on residential openers manufactured since 1993, and defeating them removes the protection that stops a closing door on a child, a pet or an obstruction. If a company offers to disable them to make a door close, that is the answer to your question about that company.
Can a garage door opener be too weak for my door?+
Yes, and it is more common after a door has been changed than at original installation. Adding insulation, going from a single-layer steel door to a heavier insulated or wood door, or fitting a larger door to a widened opening all raise the weight the opener has to control. An undersized opener on a heavy door strains, runs hot and fails early — but note that a correctly counterbalanced door should feel light regardless, so "weak opener" is often mis-diagnosed weak springs.
Is it worth repairing an old opener?+
The comparison worth making is the repair cost against the remaining life and safety function, not the age alone. A fifteen-year-old unit with working photo eyes, available parts and a single failed component is often worth repairing. A unit predating 1993 has no entrapment protection at all and should be replaced on that basis. Between those, the deciding factors are parts availability, how much of the mechanism is worn, and whether you want features the old unit cannot provide.
My opener works from the wall button but not the remote. Is the opener broken?+
Almost never. When the wall control works, the motor, drive and safety circuit are all functioning, so the fault is in the remote path: a dead remote battery (the most common by far), a remote that has lost its pairing, a damaged or disconnected antenna wire on the motor unit, or radio interference from a nearby LED fixture or transmitter. Those are cheap to resolve in that order.
Why does my opener work intermittently in very cold weather?+
Cold affects three things at once: remote and keypad batteries lose voltage, lubricants stiffen so the door needs more force to move, and any marginal mechanical resistance — a stiff roller, a partly frozen seal, a track slightly out of line — becomes a real load. An opener that only misbehaves below freezing is usually reporting the door's condition, not its own.
Can the opener force settings just be turned up?+
They can, and doing so as a fix is a bad idea. Force and travel settings are set to the door's actual weight and travel so the opener stops or reverses when it meets resistance. Turning force up to overpower a binding door removes exactly that protection, and it hides the mechanical fault while wearing the drive. Adjust the door; set the force to the door.
Do you service the wall control and keypad as well?+
Yes — wall controls, wired and wireless keypads, external keypads and their wiring are part of an opener service. Outdoor keypads in this climate are a wear item: moisture and freeze-thaw get into the housing and the buttons stop responding reliably long before the opener does.
What should an opener repair visit test before it finishes?+
Full travel in both directions, the up and down force settings, the down-limit position, the photo-eye alignment and function with a real obstruction test, and the contact-reversal behaviour on the door itself. Those are checks on the safety system, not niceties, and a visit that ends without them has not established that the door is safe to use.
What should I include in a opener repair request?+
Give the town and property type, say whether the door is open, closed or stopped part-way, and describe the closest match to what you are seeing — for this service that usually means motor runs but the door does not move, door reverses before closing, wall control works but remotes do not. Photographs taken from a safe distance help. Nothing on that list needs anyone to approach loaded springs, cables or an unstable door.
