Use this glossary to distinguish a sectional door from a roll-up door, an opener from the spring system, and generic “overhead door” service from the Overhead Door™ brand. Each definition connects to the page that answers the next practical question.

Door types

Garage door: A complete movable door system used at a garage opening, including sections or curtain, tracks or guides, lifting hardware and often an electric opener.
Overhead door: A descriptive term for a door that travels upward. Overhead Door™ is also a specific brand; the generic service and branded company are not the same search intent.
Sectional door: A door made from hinged horizontal sections that travel in tracks. It is common in homes and commercial vehicle bays.
Roll-up or rolling door: A door whose sheet, curtain, slats or grille coil around a barrel above the opening rather than moving in hinged sections.
High-speed door: A specialty commercial door designed for rapid cycles and traffic flow, often with dedicated controls, sensors and impact or recovery features.
Fire-rated rolling door: A labeled rolling assembly designed to close under specified fire conditions and subject to qualified inspection, testing and records.

Lift and guidance

Torsion spring: A spring that typically turns on a shaft above the opening to counterbalance door weight.
Extension spring: A spring that typically stretches beside the horizontal track as the door closes. It remains part of a loaded lifting system.
Cable drum: A grooved wheel on a shaft that manages the lift cable as the door travels.
Lift cable: A wire rope connecting the door's lower hardware to the spring and drum system so lifting force reaches the door.
Roller: A wheel attached to the door through a stem or hinge that travels inside the track.
High-lift track: A track layout that keeps the door moving vertically farther before it turns toward the ceiling, often to preserve overhead clearance.

Openers and controls

Garage-door opener: The powered operator and controls that move a properly balanced residential garage door; it is not intended to replace the spring's lifting function.
Commercial operator: A powered system selected for a commercial door's type, cycles, mounting, voltage, controls, manual operation and safety configuration.
Belt-drive opener: An overhead rail opener using a reinforced belt to move the trolley, often considered where transmitted drive noise matters.
Jackshaft or wall-mount opener: An operator installed beside a compatible door to turn the shaft rather than pulling a trolley along a ceiling rail.
Photo-eye sensor: An external entrapment-protection sensor near the floor that monitors the closing path and communicates with the opener.
Smart garage-door opener: An opener or compatible accessory providing connected status, alerts or remote control through a supported account and network.

Products and performance

R-value: A measure of resistance to heat flow under stated conditions. It does not by itself describe air leakage or total garage performance.
U-factor: A measure of heat transfer through an assembly; lower values generally indicate less transfer under the stated test conditions.
Thermal break: A material or design feature intended to reduce direct heat flow through conductive parts of a door or frame.
Weather seal: Flexible material at the bottom, sides, top or section joints intended to reduce gaps, drafts, water and debris.
Full-view door: A sectional or other door using framed glass or glazing panels for visibility, daylight and a modern appearance.
Cycle rating: A stated number or duty pattern of opening and closing cycles used to describe spring, operator or door-system application.

Commercial openings

Loading dock leveler: Equipment that bridges height and gap differences between a loading platform and vehicle; it is separate from the overhead dock door.
Vehicle restraint: Dock equipment intended to engage or help control a vehicle at a loading position, usually coordinated with signals and procedures.
Gate operator: Equipment designed to power a compatible swing or slide gate with required controls and entrapment protection.
Preventive maintenance: Planned inspection and service intended to identify wear and support reliable operation; it cannot guarantee that a future failure will not occur.
