Garage-Door Panel Damage: Replace a Section or the Whole Door?

Replace the section when one is damaged, the rest of the door is sound, the part is available and its price is a modest share of a new door. Replace the whole door when two or more sections are involved, the door is near the end of its life, the panel is discontinued, or the section-plus-labour cost approaches replacement — which happens more often than expected.

Structurally usually; visually, expect a difference. Colour fades unevenly with sun, embossing patterns are revised between production runs, and profiles get discontinued. On a prominent elevation, look at a sample against the actual door before ordering rather than trusting a colour name — a fresh section beside weathered ones rarely matches invisibly.

It depends on whether it is cosmetic or structural. A shallow dent with the door still running normally and no damage to struts, hinges or track is usually cosmetic and optional. A crease, a bent strut, damage at a bracket, or a door that has become uneven since the impact is structural and should be addressed.

It needs the manufacturer, model, panel profile, embossing and colour, ideally from the label inside a section. A recent, current model is likely available; an older or discontinued one may not be, which is frequently what tips the decision from section replacement to a whole new door.

The bottom one — it takes the meltwater, road salt and most vehicle impacts, so it rusts and dents first. It also carries the bottom brackets that anchor the lift cables, so replacing it involves transferring or renewing that hardware and re-checking the cables, which is why it is not a homeowner job despite looking simple.

Only if the replacement's construction differs — an uninsulated section in an insulated door creates a cold strip and, in a heated garage, a condensation line. Match the construction as well as the appearance, and say what the door is if you are unsure, so the correct section is ordered.

It depends on the cause and policy. Sudden accidental damage — a vehicle, a falling limb — is commonly considered; rust and wear are normally excluded as maintenance. Photograph the damage before anything is dismantled, record the date and cause, and ask your insurer rather than relying on this page.

Once the correct section is in hand, swapping it is usually a same-visit job of a few hours, since the door is dismantled only as far as needed. The long part is almost always sourcing the section, which can run to weeks on a less common model.

The hinges and roller brackets on and around the section, the struts, the track alignment on that side, the rollers, and the door's balance afterward. An impact hard enough to damage a section usually moved something else, and a new section fitted into a bent track is a repair that returns.

Surface rust caught early can be treated and refinished. Rust that has perforated the skin, or is coming through from inside the section, is not repairable in any lasting way — the steel is gone and paint over it buys a season. That is why the rusted bottom section is so often replaced rather than patched.
