Off-Track Garage Door: Warning Signs and What Not to Operate

A door that runs rougher than usual, catches at the same spot, sits slightly crooked when closed, or makes a new grinding or popping sound at one point in its travel. Caught at the first roller, it is often hardware only; operated repeatedly, it commonly needs track sections, several rollers and hinges, sometimes a cable, and where a section has creased, a panel or the whole door. Treat it as urgent if it has trapped a vehicle, left the property unsecured, or is hanging unstably. Even when none of those apply, it is a stop-using-it situation rather than a wait-and-see one, because the failure tends to get worse with every operation.

It depends on the cause and your policy. Sudden accidental damage such as a vehicle impact is commonly considered; wear on rollers and cables is normally maintenance and excluded. Photograph the door before anything is dismantled, record the date and cause, and ask your insurer rather than relying on this page.
